Stress-induced phenotypic switching in Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is both a common commensal and an opportunistic pathogen, being a prevalent cause of mucosal and systemic infections in humans. Phenotypic switching between white and opaque forms is a reversible transition that influences virulence, mating behavior, and biofilm formation. In this work, we show that a wide range of factors induces high rates of switching from white to opaque. T...

Increased phenotypic switching in strains of Candida albicans associated with invasive infections.

This study reports the rates of phenotypic switching in strains of Candida albicans isolated from superficial and invasive infections. Of 19 invasive strains, 68% showed switching activity, often at very high rates, compared with only 28% of 40 strains isolated from superficial sites (P = 0.004).

Comparison of Switching and Biofilm Formation between MTL-Homozygous Strains of Candida albicans and Candida dubliniensis.

Candida albicans and Candida dubliniensis are highly related species that share the same main developmental programs. In C. albicans, it has been demonstrated that the biofilms formed by strains heterozygous and homozygous at the mating type locus (MTL) differ functionally, but studies rarely identify the MTL configuration. This becomes a particular problem in studies of C. dubliniensis, given ...

The Phenotypic variation of Candida albicans and susceptibility to fluconazole and voriconazole

Candida albicans is the most frequent opportunistic fungal agent in human being. One of its virulence factors is phenotypic switching. In this study, we investigated the susceptibility of different phenotypes of C. albicans, obtained from clinical specimens, to fluconazole (FLZ) and voriconazole (VRZ) with microdilution reference method. In this study, 281 C. albicans of six different phenotype...

Candida albicans exhibits enhanced alkaline and temperature induction of Efg1-regulated transcripts relative to Candida dubliniensis

Filamentous growth is an important virulence trait of the human pathogenic fungi within the genus Candida, and the greater propensity of C. albicans to form hyphae has been proposed to account for the greater virulence of this species relative to the less pathogenic species C. dubliniensis. In this meta-analysis, we compare the transcriptional response of C. dubliniensis and C. albicans to the ...
